I Have a Blog Crush

To quote a good friend's favorite phrase, I heart techdirt. In my opinion it is the perfect mix of technology, policy, economics, and law and I need to figure out how to become one of these techdirt guys, writing all this important, cutting-edge stuff.

Oh well, read the blog. It is amazing.

Alumni Function

I realize that I have not graduated yet, but I went to a DC area alumni function Friday night. It was a lot of fun to get out of the house and see some familiar faces. A few other 3Ls externing in the area were there so it was nice to socialize. Over the course of the night I had a chance to speak to a number of people and ended up hitting it off with a pair of guys from the class of 97.

We ended up having a few drinks and talking about all sorts of things. Coincidentally one of the two was born and raised in Jersey and the other lived in my home town for several years while working at Johnson & Johnson. Overall it was a good time and I am happy that I decided to go.

The Summer that Just Won't End

It was 91 degrees and humid in the DC Metro area today. It is October. I love fall and it is my favorite season without a doubt. I love watching football, picking apples, watching the leaves change, and the cooler temperatures. Unfortunately that just hasn't happened this year so far.

I hear rumors that we will finally return to normal temps later this week and I hope they are right.

The Curse of the First Pick

I admit it I enjoy playing fantasy sports, it is one of the few meaningless distractions I have kept around since having children. It gives me an excuse to watch sportscenter at night and it is just plain fun. For the most part I have been pretty successful. I often finish in the top three of any league that I join.

One thing that I have noticed is that I have the uncanny knack of winning the right to the first pick in the draft. For example in the years since 2005 I have had the number one pick 3 years in a row in fantasy football. Additionally, I have had the first pick the past two seasons in fantasy baseball.

Each year my 1st pick is a major disappointment. This year I drafted Ladanian Tomlinson in fantasy football and so far he is rated behind such powerhouse backs as Ronnie Brown and Lamont Jordan. In fantasy baseball I drafted Albert Pujols (after a disappointing season out of A-Rod last year) and all I got was a 21st ranked player. This trend follows every other time I have had the first pick. Each time my guy has an "off year" and doesn't perform like he should. Throw A-Rod, Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, and Marshall Faulk on that list. Each one of them had a sub-par (or just injury plagued) season.

So the moral of the story is that next year I am willing to trade my first pick, it just isn't worth the disappointment.
